I.O.L.I. has a lending library and I just received the book, "Encyclopedia of Russian Bobbin Lace Grounds" by Tatiana and Aleksei Karpenko. There are some really amazing grounds in this book. There are no directions to speak of, just diagrams with schematics showing which direction to go to complete the ground.
The greatest thing is that these grounds only use 2 pairs (4 bobbins). I flipped through the book and chose a relatively simple looking pattern (compared to the rest of the book) and gave it whirl. Being new to bobbin lace, I've yet to collect a large number of bobbins, so I'm delighted to know I can make complicated looking lace with only 2 pairs.
Technically, I have no idea if I did the joins correctly. I did the sewings with a pair passed through the other pair and then I just continued the plaits. I'm generally happy with the picots, though some of the them have a gap, where I'm assuming I didn't tension the plait enough.

That is beautiful! Makes me want to try bobbin lace.....
ok, now I need to figure this out, I usually use at least 20 pairs so this will be a challenge:-)
