Here is a swatch of a pattern in the Encyclopedia of Needlework by Therese de Dillmont. I really like it. I need to look for a way to clean up the joints were the yellow and green meet. Perhaps if I just keep the strings tighter I won't get that little bar. Or maybe I'm not reversing the work consistantly.
The Tatted ball is separate units of 5 rings joined together in two halves. I then crocheted the two halves together, joining only at the picots. I want to do this one again bigger and with thicker string, so its more sturdy. Its using the same concept as unit orgami. I think it could be a fun way to play with tatted shapes.

Nice mat! I like the patterns from the vintage books, too.
That tatted ball is really cool!
Your works are stunning, I would suggest you to pull the double stitches of the chains a bit up, because the ds on the rings are much nearer. So your chains will get stiffer and a bit shorter and they will have nearly the same proportion, than the rings.

Your tatted ball is fab.
